Mena Suvari

|
Mena Suvari is quickly
becoming one of the busiest actresses in Hollywood, most recently starring in the
critically acclaimed movie American Beauty with Annette Benning and Kevin Spacey,
and last summer's outrageous youth comedy American Pie. She was also seen in the hit
thriller Kiss the Girls with Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd. Mena also starred in
Loser, Sugar & Spice and American Pie 2.

Mena Suvari Started modeling in
Charleston, when a rep from the local Millie Lewis Models and Talent Agency recruited her
at school. She was 12. While at Millie Lewis, she aced courses in TV Commercial, Walking
the Runway and Makeup; before she turned 13, big-time agencies came sniffing around.
"I met with all of them," she remembers, "but most of them said, 'We really
like you but we'll take you when you're 5' 7".' I was 5' 2"."
She was never going to make 5' 7". But the Wilhelmina
Agency signed her to its petite division in 1994 and sent Suvari to New York City to
work. She shot an editorial spread for Self magazine and an ad for Oscar de la
Renta. Then during a summer in Los Angeles auditioning for television commercials, she got
a Rice-A-Roni spot. "My part was walking down a flight of stairs in a high school and
seeing another girl wearing the same outfit and that girl goes home and tells her family
about it over a dinner of Rice-A-Roni." The San Francisco treat earned Suvari her SAG
membership.
She did really well that summer, and Wilhelmina urged the Suvaris
to move to California. So after Suvari finished the ninth grade back in Charleston, the
family took Wilhelmina's advice. "I was just going with the flow," says Suvari.
"I've never really asked my parents if they saw something in me. I really enjoyed
what I was doing---it was fun---but it wasn't like I harped on them to move. It was okay
if we didn't." |
